Olmstead Act

On this day, we mark the 24th anniversary of a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court that transformed the lives of people with disabilities across the United States. The case, Olmstead v. L.C., affirmed the rights of individuals with disabilities to live in community-based housing and receive services in the most integrated setting possible under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

23 Years of the Olmstead Decision

On this day 23 years ago, the Supreme Court affirmed the rights of people with disabilities to live where they want to live, including community-based housing. This ruling came from Olmstead v. L.C.  (Olmstead) which declared that under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), people with disabilities cannot be unnecessarily segregated and must receive services in the most integrated setting possible.

Celebrating the Olmstead Act

On June 22, 1999, the Supreme Court ruled in Olmstead v. L.C. (Olmstead) that under the Americans with Disabilities Act, people with disabilities cannot be unnecessarily segregated and must receive services in the most integrated setting possible. The Act definitively affirmed the rights of people with disabilities to live where they want to live, including community-based housing.
